Society of Beer Advocates - Beer for all the right reasons

National Homebrew Competition 2019

2014 - A selection of stewards

Posted on October 22, 2014 by Greig McGill

Stewarding a beer competition is hard and generally thankless work. Depending on what you're assigned, you might be ferrying beer from the chiller, pouring sample after sample of beer to exacting specifications, attending to the judges, writing up judging notes at a judging table, or any other task required to keep the competition humming along smoothly.

Here are a few of the hard working guys and girls involved:

Damien and Sally Peterson - stalwarts of the Auckland homebrew scene and one of four couples involved in NHC this year! Damien and Sally are always quick to volunteer and happy to put their hand to anything. Not only that, but they're off back to Auckland the next day to run a marathon starting at 6am! THAT is dedication.

Tom Coleman - Tom has served as SOBA treasurer for the last four years, and this will be his first NHC. We're not sure if he's keen to help or just wants to make sure we're spending money efficiently. We might have to "forget to tell him" about the post judging shout! ;-)

Brendon Jones - Known far and wide as "Cathy" for reasons far too complex and obscure to go into, Brendon is a long serving NHC steward. Always cheerful, and happy to do any task assigned, Brendon is one of those people who is great to have around when spirits start to flag in the face of all the hard work. His sense of mischief is infectious!

Joanna Bishop - Jo heads up the Waikato University's homebrewing group. But that's far from the most interesting thing about her. Jo is an author and playwright. "It's just been the ONE play", she keeps telling me, but it's no less impressive. She does like a good complex murder plot though, so we'll make sure to only give her nice jobs to do.

Karl Safi - Karl is a talented local homebrewer who came pretty close on points to the Champion Brewer spot, finishing in third place last year. We're sure he's just here to work. And nothing else. Just in case, we'll have someone assigned to keep an eye on him to ensure he doesn't tamper with any entries. He may have been overheard muttering "that's a nice beer you have there... it'd be a shame if something were to... happen to it."

Jacob Plasmeyer - OK, so Jacob's not stewarding this year. He's stepped sideways to trainee judge, as he has a very promising palate. He also has massive amounts of enthusiasm, and an enormous beard. I'm not kidding, I'm pretty sure I've heard distant cries for help emanating from within its dark and mysterious center. He gets a mention because the poor guy celebrates his birthday the day of the NHC. Yep, he's so dedicated he'd rather work hard at the judging table than celebrate his birthday! What a guy. What a beard.

So there you go! There are lots more, all equally interesting, but there's only so much space, and only the above few slipped me a tenner.

Remember, entries close 5pm this Friday, October 24th. They need to be entered on the website, paid, and received by this date.

Good luck to all entrants!
